It is a way of starting a crochet item worked from the center out as opposed to starting with a slip knot, chain and join. Form a double circle with the yarn, insert the hook into the center of the circle and pull a loop through. Chain the appropriate number for the stitch of the first round (1 for SC, 2 for 1/2 DC, 3 for DC, etc. Work the number of stitches in the circle called for and join to the top of the starting chain. Pull the end of the yarn to close the circle completely.

I've also used the technique of knitting the first row stitches encasing the yarn end. You pull the yarn end as tightly as you need to close the circle and secure it. NO HOLE in the middle!

Has any one ever heard of an x loop for starting a loose loop in crocheting, and after you do around the circle draw the end tight.
any help will be appreciated.
I think I've heard of this being called a "magic loop," and it's great because it doesn't make a circular hole in the center of your crochet project -- like no hole at the top of a hat.

I would like to thank each of you for your relies, I did watch the video and I think watching helped me better than the written instructions, but any way I've got it going now.
Thanks :D
