I have a pattern for mittens with a thumb- straight knitting stockinette- calls for 185 yds of DK yarn

Friend gave me DK yarn (Malabrigo 50% silk- 50% merino) 150 yds.

In your opinion and experience in knitting mittens for women adult hands, can I get by with 150 yards?

Good luck with yardage. I think the amount of yard needed would revolve around length of cuffs plus the length of fingers. The body of the mitten is to extend in pattern until it reaches the top of little finger, then to decrease for finishing mitten. Again, good luck, happy knitting!!

One suggestion--find a coordinating yarn and make stripes, contrasting thumbs, or add extra contrast to the cuffs. Just some thoughts.

This is exactly what I've been doing. I think that's the best way. thanks for your reply

You could always knit the cuffs in a contrasting colour.

I knit them both at the same time, if there’s enough yarn they become mittens, if not they become mitts.
