I bought a package of mill ends from ac Moore. The. Bag said 16 oz. and 453 grams of polyester and nylon. I want to make a sweater that requires 1050 yards at 5 stitches per inch. In my swatch I got the 5 stitches but how do I know if I have enough yards. I can not get any more yarn to match.

A sweater usually takes around 1 lb. (16oz) Thats for a swseater in size 18-20...38to 42" bust...long sleeves. I used to knit with mill ends a lot and that guestimate usually worked with some left over. The4 sstyle then was below the hip in length. Should be very close. Joan 8060

It depends greatly on the weight of the yarn. You will have much more yardage from a pound of fingering weight yarn compared to worsted weight yarn of the same pound of mill ends. This can make a huge difference whether or not you will have enough yarn for your project.

What I would do is look up a similar yarn (weight and fiber) and look up how many yards per gram. Then figure out how many yards of yarn I have based on 16 ounces.

As you can see by the samples below, you will get about 64 yards from 50 grams of chunky weight yarn as opposed to 200 yards of the same 50 grams of fingering weight yarn..... More than THREE TIMES the amount!
A pound of yarn May or may not be enough to knit a sweater...
