I just finished a 17 store yarn crawl here on the front range in Colorado and had a wonderful time. Took DH along for company and as my Chief Enabler. Yes, he actually does encourage me to get more yarn saying things like "Wouldn't this make a nice sweater?". And yes, I did buy a few skeins, patterns, and accessories. Wondering now if any of you have participated in local yarn crawls.

Try asking in some of your local yarn shops, not the chain stores who carry yarn. You might also try an on-line search for yarn crawls. I met several folks who'd traveled here from Wyoming to participate. One store owner said she had a customer from Alaska. Wow! That's a long schlep.

You don't have to wait for an organized one. I have gone on a few that were just some gals and LYS in our area. We make a day of it, stopping for lunch along the way. We will head north one time and then pick a different direction for the next one. And if a group arrives at a shop all at once, the owner will sometimes give everyone a small discount on their purchases.

The Pacific Northwest one from the top of Puget Sound to the area around Renton has been a major feature of my May for the last 5 years. I've bought way too many of the featured projects! It's been a great time to ride around with friends, and the year that I did a chunk of it on my own, after the official date because of a conflict, was also a lot of fun. I've learned my new home area largely based around where the LYS are.

There is one in the Hudson Valley, NY that is called "The Hudson Valley Yarn Cruise." There are about 25 shops listed. You visit as many as you can and are placed in the running in a drawing later at the culmination which is a cruise up and down the Hudson River.
It's almost done as the cruise itself is soon in Sept.
I did it last year and had a blast! Spent too much, but enjoyed visiting all the shops I could.

Central Texas, from San Antonio to Austin to Round Rock, has a crawl the weekend of Columbus Day. It also goes east to La Grange (I think) and west to Jonestown. It may even be 2 weekends. I've never been because my women's motorcycle group, the Motor Maids, has a big gathering at that time on the Gulf Coast. My knitting group has several members who go to each shop, which means they drive a lot of miles! They always have a great time & buy lots of yarn. Several also have won door prizes.
