I am fairly new to knitting and have made a couple pairs of socks.
My understanding is that socks need to have nylon in them to help them last longer. Also because acrylic is not a natural fibre it will make yours hubby's feet sweat, they will not be able to breathe.
But I am sure some of the wonderful and smart KP'ers will have more answers for you.
Have a great day and good luck with the socks. They are addictive once you start :)

Good advice. My first pair for my hubby was acrylic, lasted about 10 wearings. :(

You can make socks out of whatever yarn you would like to. Acrylic will work but are not the nicest socks but will wear. Wool is wonderful but after all the work you put into socks toes and heels wear fast. You can add nylon to toes and heels. My hubby can't wear wool as it makes his feet stink!!!! PU!!! Gauge is what you need to look for when chosing your pattern.

Acrylic yarn for socks is really a bad idea. Acrylic socks would be a lot like wearing plastic bags for socks. Hot and sweaty feet would follow.
I would strongly recommend a good sock yarn. Deborah Norville Serenity Sock Yarn is available from Joann's online and it is currently on sale... two skeins would make a great pair of socks. (2x50gm) It is a superwash wool, rayon (from bamboo) and nylon mix...wears well and feels great.
You can also try a cotton blend... but please avoid acrylic... you will be much happier with something else.

When you shop for yarn ask for sock yarn. It's worth the cost as they will last longer. In Mary Maxin they sell Surprise Sock Yarn. You don't get to pick the color but they send you enough (6 skeins) to make (3 pairs of socks & it. cost about $16.00
