I cannot figure out how to do a yarn over purlwise - I know it is probably very simple - but somehow - I just can't figure it out. Can someone help me? Is there another stitch I could do to replace this? Thank you.

Wrap the yarn completely around the needle. I know that feels counter-intuitive, because you only wrap it halfway around the need on the knit side, but it is right. You go from front, to back, to front in order to get the yarn back onto the proper side of the piece for the next purl stitch.
