Is there a secret to winning a bid on Ebay? I haven't gotten the memo! I've put in 3 different bids to get a Royal yarn winder and lost all three auctions! I have a alert to let me know if I've been out bid but it seems like just about the time the auction ends and I'm the highest bidder..someone else wins! All I want is a stupid yarn winder!! :~\

Yes, there are secrets or methods.....that can help you and a sniping serice you can buy. I like to snip myself and do.......got one set up now! LOL!!

I could share my secrets with you but would you outbid me?! LOL!

Bottom line, though; Money talks! LOL!! It's all about what you bid. If you're a newbie, you'll get on to this eventually.

Send me a PM with your telly # in it (if you can or want) and we could talk for a long time about Ebay then talk about knitting or crocheting! LOL!!

We've been Ebayers since May 2000. Probably 3500 transactions but only 2600 or so show up as if you buy again from the same seller, you get just one in the total.......also, not all buyers and sellers will do feedback......we could have 4500 for that matter. LOL!

Hi, sweetie. We buy and once in a '''blue corn moon''' we'll sell. LOL! It is possible, too to go back 30 days and see what a seller or buyer has done.

#1 son opened his own account (finally) and told me he had bought me something off Ebay and wouldn't tell me what it was (of course)! So, I know his Ebay ID, so I just bopped over there and found out that he was indeed buying me a requested item! I'm so mean! LOL!!

Collecting is something that Tom (hubby) and I share in over a wide range of items. He collects, restores and '''keeps'''.

I do, too and I want to be at our '''sell out auction''' when we move to a retirement home, etc.

I'm gonna sit and knit or corchet (God willing), look over at Pa and say:

"Pa, do you remember what we paid for that?" LOL!

Oh my, our house is huge......and full! I have to go vertical like the VTOF (Vertical Take Off) jets or helios to house his tube radios; Lovely things and many of them sit as a piece of furniture in our home.

The table tops, though are a problem; I put towels on them and ask hubby to stack them up like pancakes! LOL!!

It is my intent, also to open a, "Ma and Pa fix-it shoppe where we'd also sell '''stuff'''' and at the same time, advertise this:

Piano and guitar lessons
LYS
Museum

If I sell it on Ebay, I'll pop a topic on the subject, eh? Eh! But, I just have too much fun collecting all the odd things related to my beloved crafts and just can't part with them.......unless this shop does indeed come to bear.

What's on your hooks or needles?

My priority right now is to view videos on techniques, etc., so that I can better teach.

I do that late in the night as it draws bandwidth usage and we're on limited during the day and unlimited from 1-6:00 a.m., CDST. I go to bed late anyhow as a SAHM with an empty nest so I just go to bed an hour later now and start videos about 11:00 p.m. Most aren't a real priority, anyhow, but I want it done as you just don't know how helpful or non helpful they are. LOL!

Donna Rae,
I love reading your post:)

I, too, collect, yarn, yarn, & more yarn, oh, and fabrics too.
I am also an empty nester and turned my eldest sons room into my sewing/knitting/computer/my room.
I used to sale on Ebay, haven't done that for a while. I used to show horses and when I quit that I sold alot of my show clothes etc, on Ebay. But I have been looking at, what else, yarn on Ebay. Getting ready to bid on some I think.
I too, have a bandwidth limit, my unlimited time is 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. my time. I sometimes get up at 4 to watch videos since hubby works days.
Have a great night
& keep on collecting:)

(((((((( Well, imagine that! LOL! Why so? (:) ))))))))

I, too, collect, yarn, yarn, & more yarn, oh, and fabrics too.

((((((((((( Bully for you; Yarn, eh? Fabris? Go for it! LOL! I'm looking at the chenille at Hobby Lobby for baby blankets as I'm tired of crocheting and knitting! LOL!

I like to keep mine down (yarn) but when I turn my back, OOPS! LOL!!

I rather like to sew, too but crocheting and knitting took over; I remember, and still have, making the 3' Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls with the yarn hair. Fun but not perfectly sewn.

I'm not a good seamstress but do like to mend on the machine and hand mend. ))))))))))

I am also an empty nester and turned my eldest sons room into my sewing/knitting/computer/my room.

(((((((( Yes, take it over! (:)

Hubby took over the two rooms the kids had, plus he has one of his own! Talk about messing them up! I give him a month's notice that the kids are coming in and if he's not out of their rooms, I go in with a laundry basket and empty it! LOL! I used to sort, bag and tag.......got tired of it and now, I push it into a laundry basket! Twice a year I will sort! He's awful but ya gotta love him! LOL! )))))))))))

I used to sale on Ebay, haven't done that for a while.

((((((((( Once in awhile, we'll pop and auction just for fun! LOL! We sit and watch it to the moon, too! (:) )))))))

I used to show horses and when I quit that I sold alot of my show clothes etc, on Ebay.

((((((((( Ah, horses, eh? Showing, eh? Fun? Of course!!

We have three, some minis, ponies, donkies, llamas, sheep, goats, dog, cats and mice! LOL!!

Right now, Patch is in here with one day old kitties. We snag them into a laundry basket, raise them for four weeks or five, have fun doing that, pop the mom out every two hours and also overnight then later they go to the corn crib to live where we put out dry cat food. We watch them, of course. )))))))))

But I have been looking at, what else, yarn on Ebay. Getting ready to bid on some I think.

((((((( Let me know if you win, eh? What kind of yarn? I get my 100% washable wool, Moda Dea from an Ebay seller; Black and OD for making helmet liners for the troops; Love that stuff! Nice sheen to it! ))))))

I too, have a bandwidth limit, my unlimited time is 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. my time. I sometimes get up at 4 to watch videos since hubby works days.

((((((( As, you must be west of me (Iowa), eh? Mountain time zone? Wait...no, you're east of Iowa. I've had a scotch and water with a twisted lemon! LOL!! )))))))))))

Have a great night
& keep on collecting:)

(((((((((((( Roger that! I'll get pix over to the group eventually of some of my collection!

Off to find food! LOL!

Nite-Nite!

go to ebay and read the information about 'proxy' bidding... that way, you decide that you don't want to pay more than 20 dollars as you can get one from knitpicks for that... so you put in 20 dollars... every time someone makes a bid your proxy automatically kicks up your bid... they are preset amounts and you can usually tell that it's one dollar or 1.50 or sometimes 2 dollars... the seller sets that.... so your bid happens without you there at all till it goes over your proxy amount... then you have dropped out unless you go back in and re-bid... i always decide what i'm going to spend in advance and that's it.... if i get it, fine, if not....too bad....it'll be around again..... i'd look for the sales at joanne's or knitpicks...you can find one for around 12 every now and then..... but 20 isn't bad....

Hi Julie, yes there is a knack to getting what you want on ebay. My two sons call me the ebay Queen, because I have got it down to a fine art, and always get what I'm after. If my sons want anything, they tell me what it is and how much they are prepared to pay, and leave it to me. So far I have managed to get everything they have wanted too. Leonora.

I win things often on Ebay and I think the trick is to put in the highest bid you are willing to go, i.e. auction at .99 but I would go as high as 5.00, then they automatically bid for you up to that amount, as the bids increase. Most times I would get it in the mid-range amount.

This is why I do not fool around with Ebay. Its happened to me to many times. I would just see what they have that doesn't require biding or go buy one like at Knitpicks. It isn't worth getting all up tight over. If your after that one brand I would Google it and see who has it.

Talk about Day-Shar-Voo!!!! (I did look up this word but no luck) sorry.

Anyway, here I am reading your news and I am thinking I am relieved I am not the only person with this knitting schedule. I get up at 2 a.m. knit till 4-4:30 goes back to bed, gets up at 6:30 and knits till 8:00am. Then I do all my chores around my hubby, cook lunch, then quilt for 2-3 hours, etc, etc. Start knitting again at 7:30 - 10:30 p.m.

Like the saying goes, when Momma is happy, everyone is happy! Boy, am I happyand it would seem you are too!

I don't know where you are but I'm in Adelaide South Australia and couldn't buy one here so bought from US the following:

ordered 17th August from

Stanwood Imports
14701 Arminta St, Ste B
Van Nuys, CA 91402, USA

www.stanwoodimports.com
Tel: 310)962-9184

I got confirmation of my order from Customer Service the same day.

Received yarn winder 24th.

Cost including postage from US - under $40AUD

Hope this helps.

Cheers from Adelaide South Australia

I've had several of the KP winders and they're every bit as good as the more expensive ones (over the years I've worn out several different ones). Save yourself some eBay grief and try one. :- )

Be aware that there are ghost bidders on e-bay. A seller will get someone to max his bid just so that you keep bidding until they get to a reasonable price. :hunf:

I ended up going this route as well, I had tried e-bay but the price was more than what Knit-Picks. I was placing an order and there was free shipping over a certain amount. I added it to my order to get the free shipping and then it didn't cost me much at all! I'm very happy with it!!!

I had already had my order confirmed before I saw this post. However, I'm happy with the one I bought and it is serving me well. Already it's almost due for Long Service Leave (haha)

This is a slight aside from the main topic but I need some help purchasing a ball winder (saw Knit Picks version and really liked it) and a yarn swift. It is the latter that seems to be the major problem. First, they cost the earth! Second, I don't know what type or size I should purchase. I average more than a few sweaters per year but am getting older and no longer enjoy winding yarn. I saw one that would take up to 60" skeins of yarn and was made of covered metal; cost $28.00. And, I have seen several made from different types of wood or plastic in the small to large range, with prices that begin at $40.00 and go up to almost $100. I want a swift that will open and close easily. Hold the yarn well without slipping. And produce compact, well-formed center pull skeins. Am I correct in thinking that a medium size swift would take almost all types of spooled yarn? Since I am almost 70 yrs. old, I really don't want to make a seriously expensive investment in a swift. However, I'm put in mind of the statement: "You get what you pay for!"
