I'm not sure where you're having the problem Pat but is this the pattern?
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: rep from *.
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: P1, * P2tog leaving both sts on the left needle; knit same 2 sts tog and slide from needle together; rep from * to last st, p1. rep rows 1-4

I knit and crochet and have worked zig zags (ripples?), too.
