Tom, I am so amazed at what you have started, and where it has gone so far. You are sweet to do this, and to knit socks for others.
I just started teaching knitting/crocheting to people at my church. They are actually clients of a rehab for addiction. They live on the property, and part of the rules are that they attend church. Some of the people here were so kind when I asked "where to start" and asked for advice. They sent hooks, needle, stitch markers, patterns, and even some yarn to these people out of the goodness of their hearts. I am so grateful and we are so excited to knit/crochet together. They are learning so fast, and constantly want more. I have shown a couple of them your website, and explained to them what you do for others. They are surprised, and amazed, and a little envious all at the same time. We just wanted to thank you for being such a caring, loving, shining example for us.
Soon, we hope to start helping in our community. We would like to donate to the local vets who served our country, as well as to some of our nursing homes, and homeless shelters. So far, it's been an amazing, and exciting journey.
Welcome, from Northeastern Oklahoma
Thank you so much for all your great ideas, please keep them coming. This is all very helpful
Thank You Albie, I will look into this. I appreciate the information.
Watching this post with interest. Starting a knitting group at my church, and we could also use some ideas.
Hello all, It has been really crazy here the last 2 weeks or so, and I wanted to let y'all know what has happened since I posted about starting this group! The announcement was well received, and the ladies were so excited. I have had lots of questions and have done my best to answer them. I finally decided to put together a little information letter for them that included my phone number in case they get completely stuck. This seems to have helped them feel more comfortable. We had a little meeting on July the 7th, and I tasked them with teaming up and researching a few of the charity places we could help out. I truly want this to become their ministry, and want them to help make the choices that come with giving to others. We will be choosing 2 or 3 places to donate to sometime in the near future.
Our first real "how to class" starts this Sunday evening. I am busier than I have ever been, but SO Enjoying the process.
I do work full time, my husband and I take care of my mother who lives with us full time. We also manage to care for his aging father for 10 days of each month to give his brother a break (he has dementia and its advanced to the point that he doesn't really know who we are most days) We also adopted 4 of my husbands grandchildren who are all teenagers!!! LOL OMG, Right? and now I am taking this on too! lol
I Would like to thank those of you who have helped me get this going. A couple of you sent Needles and hooks, markers and even a needle gauge. we received a few skeins of yarn and a few dish cloth patterns also. I appreciate each of you so much!
As of Sunday Evening the men are now asking to join us, and we have been given the ok for this! WOW is all I can say. I sent around a signup sheet and there are about 12 more names on it. We have talked to a few of the yarn companies about donations, but have yet to get an answer from them. I have been checking out some of the local thrift shops in my area in search of yarn, but that has not paid off either. I have posted the need on a couple of local websites as well, and will keep checking and updating those posts. At this time we do not have enough yarn for everyone that has expressed interest in participating in this class. I will be checking my local Walmart for sales this week, and hope to get my hands on enough yarn to get this program off the ground.
If you have any other ideas I would truly welcome and appreciate them!
I will post here and update all of you that are interested in keeping up with how things are going.
To those of you that helped. I can not thank you enough!
Hello, and welcome from Oklahoma. I am sorry for the loss of your mother. Bless you for loving your mother so much. Sounds like she was a true knitter at heart, and by you giving to others you are helping others to continue this craft. Its nice to see her stuff is going to people who will use it, and not just being left to the garbage. Thank you for doing this.
I think you did a beautiful job on this project, and I thank you for the writing on being considerate of others. You are dead on with that! I am sorry you had to deal with the Negative side of things, but happy to see you managed to take that and use it for some good in your life.
Hi all, I just wanted to express my gratitude to all of you who have offered words of wisdom, suggested places to check for materials, and left a kind word. I can not tell you how grateful I am to each one of you!
The church we attend is called "Choices Church" So we thought a fitting name for this little ministry would be " Our Choice Knit & Crochet" because making the choice with the intent to help others is a great blessing to everyone involved.
I offered to do a class every other Sunday Evening because the clients have other classes that are required to graduate the program suck as anger management, group counseling, work search and resume building skills, Christianity 101, Celebrate Recovery, and much more that I can not remember at this time. Yes the program keeps them pretty busy, but its necessary for those that need a daily routine.
I have also let them know that I will make myself available 3 times a week for 30 minutes prior to services, and 30 minutes after services for things like help/Questions, Information, and what I am calling a "mini session" to all those who need it. We attend church a couple times a week, as well as a bible study there one night a week, and we always arrive very early to be there for those who need us, I.E. Prayer/Someone to talk with.
We have set a start date of July 7th.
This will give me some time to get things in order. I am in the middle of compiling a list of the all be it strange language we use for knit and crochet, and introductory letter with my Name and Phone Number, Links and resources they will need, and other places they can go for help. There is still so much to do, and I have already started looking at patterns for things I can use as an example of just how easy you can go up to just how intricate.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward with this adventure. We want nothing more than to be able to help others in need.
If you have any questions, or would like to help in any way, Please send me a PM.
Again, We are humbled and grateful for the advise and opinions offered here.
God bless and happy knitting/hooking.
I will. I am meeting with the directors wife this Sunday after church to set a start date and workout all the details. We are thinking that every other Sunday Evening to start with. I am excited to get going. I have never thought of myself as an instructor/teacher, but I love this craft and I know I will be learning things from them as well. I so hope there are some that surpass my skill level and take this art to a whole new place.
Again, Thank you all. Any and all help with yarn and materials will go to them and be so very appreciated.
Have a Blessed Day!
What an awesome gift. Thanks for sharing
Wow, I love this, and you did an amazing job. My sisters house is all done in western theme. She and her husband love horses, roping, rodeo, and all that goes with it. If she saw this, she would almost be willing to kill for it, LOL. I am not able to read graphs at this time, but hope to start learning soon.
Thank You for sharing.
The residents range in age from 19 to around 58 at this time. Some may suffer with arthritis, and the information you provided is well noted. Thank You for your help. All of you are full of such great information, and it's helping me compile a list of questions for them, in trying to figure out how bet to provide them with the skills they are interested in. I appreciate y'all more than you could ever know.
Keep the great information coming as it can only make us better informed.
After much thought and talking to the director's wife, we have decided on a name.
Our choice knit and crochet ministry.
The church is called Choices Church in Muskogee Ok. So we thought this was appropriate.
We appreciate all your advice, help, and prayers. Thank you to the most beautiful, caring people I know, all you Knitters and crocheters are so supportive and I am most grateful to you.
If you would like to help in any way, please send me a private message for the address.
Ladies and gents! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Thanks for all your help. I have been checking the thrift stores for sometime now, but to no avail. This is a faith based program for people dealing with addiction. There are few People there who are not clients, or were at one time clients who are now in the process of job searching, house hunting, and dealing with the other life skills that either were not taught prior, or that were lost during their addiction. There isn't much money in the church. I got involved because my husbands family member was there as a client.
We fell in love with the church, the pastor, and the clients and chose to stay.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate all the advice
