This item has been on display in our local museum with a 1854 Singer sewing machine but nobody on staff knows just what it is. I thought the collective knowledge available here was a good bet for identifying this approximately 6 inch long item. TIA
I will frog and try this, 'k2tog on one side and M1 before the final st on the other side.'

My pattern did not include the, slip one as to purl, that would make a difference I think.
