We have a cat, so we no longer feed the birds, and I miss seeing them so much! I love your photographs.

This is an example of one of my many reasons for wanting to remain within the European Union.

My husband found this article in this morning's Guardian. It shows the difference between the attitude of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the US and the higher safety standards demanded by the European Union.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/22/chemicals-in-cosmetics-us-restricted-eu?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

In this quote from the link an American senator, who has worked in children's health, explains.

“Many Americans are unaware that they are absorbing untested and unsafe chemicals in their products ………. Generally, the EU has got it right. In the US we have a strong favouritism towards companies and manufacturers, to the extent that public health and the environment is being harmed. The pendulum has swung in an extreme way and it’s really going to take a general awakening by the public ……….. At the heart of the EU’s approach is what as known as its Reach (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) laws which require manufacturers to prove to regulators that a product is safe before it can be used. The US has similar rules for new chemicals entering the market but no such precautionary principles for the thousands of potential toxins already in use.
The disparity in standards between the EU and US has grown to the extent it touches almost every element of most Americans’ lives." /end quote from link.

If we leave the EU, and instead make ourselves dependant on increased trade with the US (as their president has said is what he wants - and he most certainly does not mean for our benefit!) we open ourselves to being deluged with products (food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fertilisers and pesticides etc) which, at present, are not permitted to be sold here because of health and safety issues.

I have many other reasons for thinking that Brexit will be a disaster. I am particularly concerned with the use of fossil fuels and the research into cleaner energy sources - both of which are looked on very differently in Europe from the way they are seen in the US of their present administration, whose influence I think would become larger with an increase in UK/US trade. I also think that our national security is better served by staying within the large umbrella of the EU.

I agree with all those that are upset that we are leaving the EU. I am not just upset about it I am extremely concerned and angry about it!

I am sick to death of hearing "next time there's a general election and I don't like the result can we have another?" because that is such an unintelligent thing to say.
The referendum wasn't a vote that is the same as voting in a political party for FIVE YEARS in a general election, or FOUR YEARS if it is a local election, it was (as all referendums are) nothing more than an opinion poll. More importantly the results of the referendum is for FOREVER.

Leaving the EU will effect us in a bad way but it will effect the younger generation far more.

I wonder how many of those that voted leave....have over the past 40+ years...... thought day after day, week after week, year after year, I would be better off out of the EU. I wonder how many of them have thought this when on had their foreign holidays, when buying their new car, their white goods, their clothes, took their medication, or every time they ate a meal. I also wonder how many of them knew (or even now know) all the true facts regarding the EU. I also wonder if these same people ever went out every FIVE years and voted for their MEP or even know who their MEP is.

Seeing that they are under the disillusion that we are ruled by the EU I would like them to explain what all the 73 UK MEP's did/do in the EU. Do they think they are were/are there to clean the desks and make the tea? I would like them to explain why if we are ruled by the EU we were allowed to vote against having the Euro and why we won that vote (along with another two or three counties out of the twenty eight) so that we don't have it. The last time I looked in my purse I still had stealing in it.....with the Queens head on the notes and coins.

I am sick of hearing "when the Lisbon treaty comes into force in 2020 see what happens then" It came into force in 2009 but they are reading the stupid fake documentation that is doing the rounds and being taking in by it.

I am sick of hearing that the EU gave money to Cadbury's to leave the UK along with other companies some of which are still in the UK.
Common sense should make them ask themselves why would the EU want one of the countries in the block not to do well? Common sense should make them ask themselves why would they want Kraft (an American company) take it over? Why don't they research the true facts? Once they have the true facts they should then ask themselves why do these people have to lie in order to win support? Instead they listen to....and therefore are....taken in by a lying idiot.

Rant over; though there are so many other things that could be mentioned to prove that a heck of a lot of people are being duped.

I am please that this topic was started. I am also pleased to have the chance to discuss who we should vote for in the EU elections. I like others have always voted Labour but was thinking only yesterday that it would be nice for all those that are against leaving to vote for the same party. I think the safe bet is the Lib-Dems.

THIS DOES NOT BELONG ON KP. I only read the title...once again, friends, most, if not ALL of us get the news daily.

Actually, however much you may think that the USA is centre of the universe, those of us who live in the rest of the world do not get this on our news programmes.

I agree with you. It doesn't matter how anyone voted, democracy must not be destroyed.

Can I use a analogy? You agree to buy a house. The estate agent tells you all about it. It's beautiful, it has a huge garden, he describes the wonderful life you could have there, enjoying beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. You sign the contract, then you find out that the garden isn't just yours, it's a communal garden and you have to share it with six other houses, including one with six unruly children. In addition, next year a leather tanning factory is being built just 500 yards away, obscuring your view. You signed the contract...should you be able to change your mind, given that the estate agent lied to you?

I'm still just as upset as well, and in fact I'm in a quandary over what to vote in the UE elections on Thursday. I'm contemplating voting Lib Dem, something I said I would never do again (I did it once as a tactical vote and it allowed the Tory to get in). The reason I'm thinking Lib Dem is that I want to send a message to the politicians that I want a re-think, a vote for any other party may not have the same effect.

Any advice?

My husband and I are doing the same....and I'm a member of the Labour Party!

hmm - I need more information. I don't understand why you are upset.

I really don't want to leave the European Union for so many reasons. The peace we have enjoyed with our neighbours since WW2 being a major part of it. We have a lot of benefits being part of the EU, far more than negatives. In fact a lot of people who complain about being told what to do by the EU do not realise that we have enshrined a lot of EU laws into our own laws, and they will not change. Universities will suffer because they will no longer receive huge grants from the EU. Our farmers currently receive EU subsidies. Our NHS relies on millions of foreigners, many from the EU who may have to leave. Our economy will be destabilised. We have no guarantees that we will get trade deals with other countries...I'm sure we will, but at what cost? I think it's a definite backwards step at a time when we should be working at making this world a "We're all in this together" place. I'm sure that other people who know more than I do could add to the list.

So sorry for your loss. My mother delivered a still born boy the year before I was born ( I turned 70 in April). She grieved for him all the rest of her life, even though she went on to have five more children. The void never goes away.

That's the thing, isn't it? There is always that baby shaped hole in your family. I never met my cousin Suzanne. She died aged 3 months. My aunt and uncle are in their 80s now, had two more children, but have never stopped loving Suzanne. I was ten when Suzanne died. I named my eldest daughter Tania Suzanne. My Granddaughter is Sylvia Maple Suzanne. Suzanne's memory lives on, 60 years after her passing.
