I am making a keyhole scarf in which I bound off the middle stitches, then cast the stitches back on on the next row. I wanted the cast on stitches to be sturdy so I doubled the yarn for the cast on stitches. I thought at first that doubling the yarn would make the top of the opening too wide, but it didn’t. It did reinforce the opening, however, & I am pleased I tried this. Maybe this is standard procedure, but I don’t remember seeing this hint before. I thought someone else might find this trick
useful.

Great idea. Thanks for sharing your great idea. What cast on did you use? I'm thinking next time I do one row buttonholes I might think to do this. I wonder if I could figure out how to work it out for the stitches that get bound off too.

I used a cable cast on. I was wondering about trying that for the bound off in the middle of the row stitches too. Great minds & all that! For this yarn, Vanna’s Choice, using the single strand for the standard bind off produced a nice firm stitch.

Thanks for the idea! The opening normally stretches! And then I have to reinforce it! This should work very nicely!
On the the few buttonholes I’ve made, I used silk buttonhole thread to work buttonhole stitch around it.

On the neck-warmers my daughter requested for her fellow pre-dawn hikers, no hole, just a double layer of narrower knitting for the tail to slip through.
