Yesterday, with the help of this wonderful group, I picked up stitches for button bands and finished one side, bound them off and now it is shaped like a crescent moon. It said to use a knit wise bind off - I assumed that meant to bind off by putting needle in as knitting. So, what did I do wrong???

Hopefully you didn't cut your yarn when you finished. If so you'll need to tink. Take that bound off row out one stitch at a time. And bind off loosey goosey. Maybe even use a needle one size larger for the bind off row. And remember blocking with help too with new bind off.

I don't see any need to take it out one stitch at a time, but it probably would be a good idea to rip 8-10 stitches at a time and then pick them up with a smaller needle. When that cast off row is all undone, then use a larger needle to cast off. (if I'm knitting with a 4, I use a 6 to cast off. If a 6, I use an 8. If an 8, I only go up one size to a 9, etc. It's a trial and error, but these ratios usually work). It's really kind of hard not to pull your tension tighter when casting off, but using a larger needle fixes that.

windingRoad, crochetknit, annweb, dcsmith77 and chickkie - Thank you all so much. I am going to think and use a larger needle. The video of Lucy Neatby looks interesting. I want to practice that one first. I need to get this sweater done, hopefully, this weekend. Again, thank you all.

you naver have to worry about casting off too tightly if you use Lucy Neatby's modified conventional bind off

Cool - I am going to try this on my Baby Sophisticate today!

Which way is your crescent shape? If you bind off edge is wider than the edge where you picked up stitches you might have picked up too many stitches.
If your button band slowly bows to where the bind off edge is short than the edge where you picked up the stitches you might not have picked up enough stitches.
These are just other things that can occur that is more than just the bind off row.

I agree with Past - if you pick up too many stitches, your band is wavy and if you do not pick up enough, the band is tight and curves, pulling the sweater up. My knitting bible says that many seasoned knitters try for the correct number of pick up stitches several times and says not to become discouraged.

If your buttonband is ribbing, then your bind off should also be in ribbing...at a loose tension.

If your button band is garter stitch, I like the Icelandic bindoff. I like that it doesn't have the chain stitch edge.
I am having trouble with the link. Go to you tube and search and you will find it with no problem.
