Thank you for the tip scottishlass. I thought I was the only one with this problem and tried everything from bandages to taping a wad of fabric around my right index finger.

Lately I've been using an altered glove. I bought a pair of inexpensive mini stretch gloves and snipped off the thumb and all fingers except the index finger. I placed one of the snipped-off fingers over my index finger, and put my hand into the glove. This gave my index finger a double layer of protection. It works okay and is reusable.

However this tip sounds like a much better solution and I'm certainly going to give it a try.
