I have a pattern i am waiting for the yarn for, every row is purl, haha i dont think so,it looks like garter stitch.
The pattern needs 250gms yarn,if i do it in garter or stocking stitch will it use the same ammount, more or less?i have 300gms and it is a loose fit shrug, thanks ladies.

Garter stitch uses more yarn than stockinette for the same vertical length, but the same amount for the same number of rows. The same nunber of rows won't be as long, though.

Did you mean to say, 'the same number of stitches'?
If the rows are the same length, then the same number of rows use the same amount of yarn. The garter stitch won't be as long as stockinette, though.

Exactly! 20 rows of garter is not going to give the number of inches that 20 rows of stockinet will give.

Thanks i get it,its 40sts for a certain length so i'll just knit st st till that length,i cant do all purl rows my hands couldnt cope,so what st is all purl rows, reverse st st?
Well, if the pattern calls for all rows to be purl, then you can knit all rows and have the same effect and use the same amount of yarn and it will still look like the pattern.

If your pattern say's to purl every row you should not be getting garter stitch, onthe other side you should have stocking stitch.
Only if you're knitting in the round.

No, stockinet is knit one row and purl the next next row which makes all knit stitches on one side and all purl stitches on the other. To purl every row is the same as knitting every row, because if you knit every row, the back side of every knit row is the same as a purl row.

I read an article that counted rows in a 4x4 swatch in garter and stockinette. garter took 72 rows for the yarn size while stockinette took 36. That information was eye-opening to me.

This is true if you are knitting round and round on a circular needle. But if you are knitting back and forth, purling every row will give you garter st, the same as knitting every row will.

If you want reverse stockinette st (knitting back and forth) you will have to knit a row, purl a row, making sure the purls are on the right side.

Edit: Oops, missed the previous few posts, which said the same thing as I did...

Hi, I have a swatch I made to see the differences between stockingette and garter stitch. I purl very loosely and as a result, the stockinette is more loosely knit than it should be. With the "correct" tension, the difference between the two stitches would be even more apparent. But, you can definitely see the difference in the swatch.
