Since Houndstooth seems to be back in fashion this season here is an easy pattern to try, from an old Pinguin book "1500 Patterns".

MOCK HOUNDSTOOTH
Multiple of 3 stitches plus selvedge, worked in two colors

Row 1: Dark - *sl 1 purlwise, k 2*
Row 2: Dark - P across
Row 3: Light - *K2, sl 1 purlwise*
Row 4: Light - P across
Repeat from row 1.

Sorry I don't have a photo, but if you do a small swatch you can see the houndstooth appear. This pattern can be used in any plain pattern and any weight of yarn.

I'm working on a cardigan for myself, with the back and sleeves in plain light grey (on my Bond) and the front handknit in grey and a varigated pink, mauve and grey. Both yarns are slightly fuzzy and I've had them so long I don't know what brand they are any more.

To MsIvy: Sorry, I should have explained further - you need selvedge stitches at both the beginning and end of the row.

To Rujam: It could take a while to see the finished sweater. Right now I'm crocheting a layette set for a new great-grand daughter due in December and a cross stitch picture for youngest daughter and her husband. Next is matching knitted sweaters and hats for two granddaughters (sisters). With four daughters, two sons, plus spouses, ten grandchildren and 5 (so far) great-grandchildren, the ME stuff gets relegated to the back burner!
