Getting picky here but I would like one that tapers behind the head under the hair and has no button or tie. I just find that shape more functional for women with hair to deal with.
Warm as the 1898 is, it is unattractive on many face shapes and then the giftee will not wear it.
I can knit or crochet.
Thanks for any reference to ones you have made and recommend.

I know you said you don't want to hear it, but you can just use the band portion of the 1898 hat.
But there are also many patterns on Ravelry.
Here is one but it is a bit narrow. Double-Layer Reversible Cable Headband pattern by Viktoriya Loshkarova

This one tapers, but I would extend the length of the taper and make it more narrow. Timeglas headband pattern by Sigrid Gravers Nielsen

Here are a few that might work for wearing under hair at the back of the neck.

Thanks for inspiring the dive into Ravelry. It is inspiring me to design a double knit tapered headband.

I've made this one several times. It's nice because the ribs allow it to be narrower or wider. Maybe it's one you would like. Happy Needling.

I do like a short row headband that is wider on the ears and narrow under my long hair. I will have to find the pattern I use. I haven't made one for quite a few years as I have a couple that are working well for me (in winter storage right now).

As I use varying size yarns to make it and am too lazy to do the math, it comes out varying lengths. It is supposed to button, but I either tie it permanently if it is too long, sew it together neatly if it's just right, or sew in a piece of wide elastic if it's too short, after I have tried it on for size. I do not find a knot or seam uncomfortable. If I could make one that came out the right length, a button would actually be quite convenient.

I don't know about working it in the round, as I said, the ones I make vary in size so much that it wouldn't be practical without a little math beforehand.

One of my favorites is in sock yarn, the other is in a thicker wool I got somewhere. A long color change variegated yarn works well.

I am not having any luck finding my pattern, we have a student coming so I'll have to go soon, I'll look later.

This one is appealing to me and giving me design ideas. Provisional cast on so can grafting the finish.
Knit in the round. Full fashioned increases on either side of a purl stitch to make the edges? May not need the purl stitch. I knit a leaf shaped coaster this way.
This is turning into a project that uses some of my favorite techniques. Thank you.

I have knit a number of these and they are fun. I didn't like the button closure and there isn't much taper. This turned out beautiful in a Malabrigo Rios.
Thanks.

I have made a couple of headbands but they seem to stretch and now my hair is too short to need anything. As far as the 1898 hat is concerned I have never seen one that flatters the wearer. I put my last one in a box of hats for donation

I guess I am thinking more of earwarmers that are headbands for my West Virginia relatives. It gets really cold there. No 1898s for anyone but they will grab with delight every Liebling Neck Warmer I make.

I found this video on Youtube. It's a crocheted headband/earwarmer made with and elastic loop. I think you could use any knit or crochet pattern, just cast on stitches on the loop. You could start out narrow and increase until you get the width you want, then taper it down on the other end.

When I am cold (minus double digits), the last thought on my mind is about how flattering or not my warm headgear might look.

Well I opt for flattering and warm because I believe you can have both.
exactly! Most people won't wear something that does not flatter them. Some in my family won't wear anything but black, so they get nothing!
