I was looking for a nice summer shawl that I could knit for my mum but to do it I had to get the yarn yesterday as I didn't have the time to wait for delivery with the shifts I was working. I picked a couple of possibilities and needed Debbie bliss or rowan silk yarn and had seen them there before. All I found was shelves and shelves of bonus and cotton yarns no silk yarns at all, when I decide to knit on a whim I need to be able to go and get my yarn straight away or come home in a very bad mood! I had to console myself with knitting for my gorgeous niece who I get to meet in 9 days.

p.s anyone in uk know of any shops that sell LOTS of different types yarn so I wouldn't be limited on choice I would be willing to travel, ordering online isn't the same, yes my addiction to yarn IS that bad :)

Black sheep wools looks amazing definitely going to have to go there and I have also been wanting to go back to Scotland so will have to check out John Lewis when I do. There is just nowhere like that in Gloucestershire that I am aware of. When (not if) I win the lottery I'm going to have a huge yarn store with a very wide range of yarns :)

Joules, I do agree with you about Hobbycraft. I dropped in to my nearest one today, as I had some vouchers for a garden centre which is right next door, and came away very disappointed. Like you, I was looking for a nice, lightweight yarn for a lacy scarf, but there was nothing that came even close. I still have time to browse, as this is not a project I have to complete quickly, but I had expected to find something there. To be perfectly honest, the local discount store has a better selection of knitting materials than does Hobbycraft.

It is a few years since I was in your part of the world, but the last time I visited the John Lewis at Cribbs' Causeway, I was impressed by the selection of yarn - much better than in my local John Lewis.

I am always disappointed with the selection of yarn at John Lewis in Bluewater. I now do almost all of my yarn shopping online with 'Modern Knitting'.

Their website is very good, but yesterday I rang to order yarn for a project and to ask advise about the colours. Very friendly service - like having a LYS online - we had such a long chat about knitting and crochet.

Also, delivery is very quick, their prices are very good (a bit cheaper than Deramores) and you only have to spend ÂŁ20 to get free postage.

I don't feel the need to look anywhere else.

if you sign up to the UK hand knitting Asso they list a good few outlet shops, try their web site
or next time your in a super market look in the back of one of the knitting mags lots listed there

Thentwo shops I use are the Knitting hut in Woburn Sands which sell a fantastic range of beautiful yarns and Nutmeg Needlecrafts in Leighton Buzzard who sell wonderful yarns, including Rowan, but also loads of wonderful haberdashery products.
