A couple of years ago I found a really good deal on Homespun yarn. Being me, I bought a whole lot of it. I have about 8 different colors with anywhere from 5 to 12 skeins of each color. I haven't made anything with any of it yet, but now that cooler weather is here and I find myself with more knitting time, I don't know what to do with it. I don't want to knit afghans because I get bored easily with them.

I have a daughter and two grandkids who live with me, a boy, 8 and a girl, 6. Lion has a pattern for hoodies made from Homespun on their web site. I just don't know how well it will hold its shape.

Because of the weight of the yarn, anything I make wouldn't take too many hours, so even if it is something they wear for only a short time, it would be ok.

I appreciate any advice, ideas, or whatever!

If you search here with the pattern finder you can specify the homespun yarn and get lots of patterns written for that yarn.

I'd start small with some nice hats and scarves or cowls just to see how you like the finished look of the yarn--and avoid getting bored with a big project. If you love the results, your creative imagination will tell you where to go next. Good luck.

I love Homespun! I've made hats, scarves, shawls and lap robes from it. These items have been for my husband to either take to the deer lease or he uses them at work in the winter. Homespun washes and dries very well and doesn't sag or droop while wearing.

Some complain about the yarn splitting but I haven't had that problem. I'm not a tight knitter so maybe that's why. Anyway...good luck and enjoy!

I am finishing a Capelet for my mom out of Homespun, it is turning out beautifully. It is soft and will be warm for her, she is 85 and is always cold. I have some left over and I think I will make a hat and scarf set. I haven't had a splitting problem. But my interchangeable needle cord came apart, I didn't notice and lost a lot of stiches. It was kind of difficult to see all the stitches to put back on the needle but I did it.

That is specifically what I was wondering, how it would hold its shape. I've never knit anything with it, just keep it hoarded in my closet. LOL I'm not a tight knitter either, so hopefully mine won't split on me.

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking about making a hoodie for my 6-year-old granddaughter. If it turns out well and wears well, I will make one for my almost-8-year-old grandson.

There are some older ladies in my church that often get cold and have to cover up with crocheted lap robes. Maybe I will knit a few and place them around for others who can't/don't knit or crochet. I need to use up some of what I have in my closet so I can bring more yarn in from storage in my garage!!

I recently discovered on Ravelery if you select the tab yarn and type in homespun u can see projects made with that particular yar and many times are able to get the pattern for free.

I have made several of the hoodies from their website and my kids love them. They work up quickly and are really cozy to wear. I have not had problems with them holding their shape. The best part is how soft they are.

My daughter requested a hoodie for my 9 YO grandson from Lionbrand that used homespun. I had the same question, also wondered how easy it would be to work with. I crocheted a prayer shawl and found it difficult to work with. Hopefully knitting will be easier. Please update us on your results.

I knitted a shawl with Homespun (in addition to scarves and hats) and I love it. Very soft. The Russian join worked great when I had to add the next skein.

If you double strand it'll work up very fast. I've made a few hats that way and they're nice and dense for extra warmth. I like the yarn well enough and have tons of it also because my mom keeps finding it on sale or at thrift stores. It makes soft, cozy scarves and I think a hoodie would be lively with it. Be sure to post pictures of your finished objects!

I've made many of the Hoodies pattern using Homespun. The grandchildren love them and they hold shape well. Also, they go in the washing machine and drier for busy families.

There is a pattern book on prayer shawls by Vanessa White and if I recall correctly, most of the yarn used is Homespun. I have used that yarn for years to make scarves with fun fur. Good luck!

I have knitted several Newsboy Hats and Fingerless Gloves pattern with HOmespun. The Pattern calls for Red Heart Zoomy yarn, but that has been discontinued.
