Just saw this note on a Bergere de France pattern. Thought it was a neat trick if one forgot the buttonhole.

No cut buttonholes:
Using a sewing needle, pick up the horizontal strand of
the stitch where you want to place the buttonhole, pull
it up and attach it 2 rows higher with a few little stitches
on the wrong side of the work. Repeat with the horizontal
strand below the first strand, and attach it in the same way
2 rows down.

This would be a great tip if you are not sure of the sex of the wearer---a baby, or something you might be selling. Could make the button holes to order!
Elizabeth Zimmerman suggests putting buttonholes on both sides of baby items, sew the button over the hole of the unneeded side. This means easy to get the buttons in the right place, can add them once you know the gender of the baby and they can be moved to the other side if a subsequent baby arrives with different anatomy.

Thank you, leoanne. I have filed it with other useful tips.

That question was one that I had asked for previous as to how to do, had replies explaining plus photos was very grateful also I wrote to In-To-Knit who supply the Bergere de France knit books from Vina who also sent a photo of how to do it has now been included on their web site with these photos that had been forward to me. I just like these books have lovely patterns in them, the only complaint I do have is not quite understanding their instructions which are a little confusing how they explain there rows etc, what I do like is that they have the number of rows that you knit that equals the cm you are require to knit
I recommend their patterns. I get them sent to me in NZ

Hi I am from New Zealand. Thanks so much for your explanation of how to make a no cut buttonhole in knitting as shown in one of the French knitting books.

I am an enthusiastic but not a very skilled knitter – and that technique would help me out with a problem Ive created in a garment Im knitting for my first grand-baby.

I wonder if it would be at all possible for you to share the photos in that book or where I might find that information with photos please. I would be most grateful.

Many thanks for your time.
Best wishes

Fiona
