I've just been looking for beret patterns on Ravelry. The first few I looked at were no longer available or discontinued. I'm wondering why they're still listed and why they come up on the first page of patterns.

Is there a way to filter these out?

If the pattern is listed as free but no longer available from the listed source, I've sometimes been able to click on the free link farther down the page and retrieve it from the archive. I realize this doesn't answer your question but it may work to get free patterns that are discontinued.

You can set filters on your search to not show discontinued patterns. Ravelry’s database is considered a database first and a market place after that. It wants to show as many patterns as possible even if they are discontinued.

I set my filters to

Not already in my library
Ravelry downloads only
Not discontinued

It's so exciting when you see the perfect pattern on Ravelry, and super annoying when you read it's no longer available!!

When this happens to me, I look for any other links on the Ravelry page. Sometimes that will lead to the pattern. If not, I will enlarge the Ravelry photo. Then, I right click on my mouse to "Search the web for image". Sometimes it will lead to the pattern on an archive site or Wayback Machine. At least I know I tried all my options to find the pattern before I give up.

If you type "-discontinued" in the search bar, that will filter them out.
That works for other unwanted also such as designers, etc.
Don't need to do it that way as the system automatically 'hides' discontinued patterns from search results. You can however click on the 'discontinued' box filter on the left to see all that are discontinued. I use this filter when I am looking for a specific pattern and not finding it in the search results. If it still does not show up in the 'discontinued' search, it was never on Ravelry.

Left side filters ---
Search result for category Accessories>Hat>Beret/Tam (188pgs, 8,986 matches - pattern photos shown). Your result may vary, as I have many patterns 'hidden' from searches, so therefore do not show up in my results.

Discontinued results -
shows 23 pages, 1165 pattern photos

If I want to see the ones in my libray that are discontinued, just also check 'in my library' and select AND: match all of these, it will only show those.
