Thank you for helping and for following up.
I don't think I will be using that particular shawl for this project, but I will download to save for future because sometimes it's hard to find a good fingering weight shawl. I appreciate your help
Thanks for letting me know. The shawl is knit in worsted weight, not fingering (and I enlarged the shawl, thus a lot of knitting).
Best of luck, Elation

Weird that I haven't been getting notifications on folks posting replies. I popped in yesterday and saw someone from Concord, MA that must be either a re-enactor or with the historical group. She listed a number of things about period dress and for emphasis listed NO SHAWLS a number of times so I have to further research. At this point my friend will be getting fingerless mit

I urge you ro contact the local enactor group (or go to their website) before sinking a lot of time/money into knitting her a shawl; most groups are very picky about what their members wear/use, insisting on authenticity, and it would be a shame if your best effort was unsuitable.

The historic knitting group on Ravelry might be a good place to start:
Thanks for the suggestion. For some reason I haven't received notifications about responses. Sorry for the delayed response. There is a response that provided a link to - listing of period clothing and more than once the list contained the item NO SHAWLS so I got the hint and I am rethinking my idea but will be doing the fingerless mits because those I did find are a for sure thing

Wow, what a rigamarole. It reminds me that once, a 'friend' was going to usher for the visiting Dalai Lama and kept trying to plait me to make her a fancy dress and stole in papaya orange with black accents in spite of me just getting out of a bad accident caused by someone else. I was nearly finished with the stole, and she told me she found out that the requested attire was a white top and black slacks. She laughed and laughed. Manipulative people, but not applicable to this situation...just going above and beyond for naught,. The stole did hang from her lofted banister. I saw this when I visited her one more time. I was too naive then and was in so much pain doing that, but she didn't care.

I am happy your gift is one of love and consideration. Wristlets sound so much faster and perhaps more useful long -erm, for the recipient. Elation

What about the Outlander series shawls? It was the 1700's so the time period should work. There are a lot of patterns out there and many are free. Just google for them.
These shawls are lovely but not period appropriate. And will tag the wear as a "FARB" or "FARBE" the reenacting term for someone or something that is "Far Be it From Accurate".

Shawls would have been woven. Here is a link to period appropriate 18th century knitted mitts 18th Century Knitted Women's Mitts pattern by Mara Riley
Or if she is a really good friend you might want to consider knitting her a pair of fine gauge stockings. For a hefty price, on consignment, I have knit a few pair of 18th Century period men's stockings. As a gift for a friend it would have to be a labor of love worthy of the relationship.

Thank you so much for your help. She has an IOU for the fingerless gloves at this point. There is a 250th reenactment in Salem, MA in November, but she understands they won't be ready on time.
