Hi screen friends,

Might anyone have a recommendation for a good quality/value acrylic yarn that works up to a knitting gauge of 24 stitches = 4 inches? Specifically that comes in black?

I have a request from the kid to crochet a specific pattern in a color set that includes using black as a framing device for the individual motifs. I've been looking at the Herschnerrs 2 ply Afghan Yarn (listed as 24 knit stitches= 4 inches) but they appear to have discontinued the color black. They have the other colors I need, so I'm hoping I can find something of similar weight/texture/appearance from another source to use along with the Herschnerrs stuff.

And yes, I am giving the gauge in knit terms but intend to crochet this piece. I find that the knit gauge is usually of better reliability for identifying yarn substitutions than are the manufacturers crochet gauges.

Any ideas on possible equivalents? Sources?

Thanks in advance for any/all help,

Michael’s Woolike might work. I think it’s considered light fingering .

Thanks all. I know back when I was running the independent wiseNeedle yarn review collection, this sort of thing was one of the things that folk would visit to resolve. Sadly it's gone the way of all things, killed by larger, more commercialized websites. YarnSub however was helpful. I found Brava Sport - a heavy fingering/sport weight acrylic at KnitPicks that looks like it might work.

I’m so glad to see you posting; I’ve loved the patterns you designed that I made.

I think that Michael's Wool-like is quite a bit finer than fingering even a light fingering. I had bought some hoping that it was similar to Paton's Kroy (sock yarn). It (the Wool-like) is much thinner (finer) than that.

100 grams grams of the Kroy (which is considered 'super fine') is 332 yards. 100 grams of Wool-like (which is also considered 'super fine') is 678 yards. There is a huge discrepancy between the two.

The label on both the Kroy and the Wool-like state the knitting gauge as 32 sts per 4 inches on US 2 needles. Weird.

All that aside, I've worked with both ... recently. The Wool like is definitely much finer than the Kroy. It's so thin/fine that I can hardly work with it.

One of my knitting buddies uses Woolike doubled for garments for her great-nieces/nephews. Normally, she won’t touch synthetics, but she’s come to like the results with it.

Lots of colours, but I can’t find their US site, only the Canadian one.

Yes, Woolike is a bit thinner than some fingering weight yarns. I consider it a lace weight and have a few WIPs in that yarn. It's one of my favorites because it's mostly acrylic and the small percentage of nylon makes it soft and seems to give it some memory. It's perfect for lace items I want to gift as I don't worry about any wool allergies or special laundry instructions. Besides, you can't beat the price and the amount of yardage you get in a skein. Perhaps try doubling it as J-J posted.

I just saw this sale 5 for$10. I'm buying for myself, I always am happy with the quality of premier yarns.
