Has anyone else ever noticed that ChiaoGoo circular needles are a bit smaller than the other brands such as Addi and Knit Picks? I use 2 circulars for socks and always buy 2 different brands so I can tell the needles apart. I have noticed that the ChiaoGoos are always smaller. I'd like to hear from others to see if you have observed the same thing. I love my ChiaoGoos and don't want to replace them.

Yes, I've observed the same thing. I just watch my gauge a bit more closely than I do with my other needles. I like them too much to give them up ;~).

A year or so ago someone posted an in-depth study of needle sizes. She noted that some needles are sized in the US and some needles are metric. They are NOT the same. Also needles of different materials are not necessarily created equal. She did swatches with needles marked the same size but of different materials and there was a LOT of difference in the sizes of the swatches. The final conclusion was that we MUST swatch if the size and fit of something really matters. Maybe someone can locate that study. It was very interesting and informative. Aloha... Bev

And you are absolutely correct ;~D.

Rather than worrying about what size the needle says it is (on its packet or on the needle itself) I store them under the size they measure. And I make sure that I use measures that are the same. SO while I have a number of different needle gauges I only use my ChiaoGoo and HiyaHiyas as the gauges are the same sizes. And why them rather than Australian ones? Becuase the HiyaHiyas are a cute sheep shape!
I figure that yes the different needles are different sizes so the best way to get them close to matching is to use the same size gauge. The materials do make a difference as well and if using two circulars it can make a difference. But the slight difference is size is unlikely to make a significant difference if you aren't using the two needles in the same item.

I remember that study, it was interesting. As stated, if fit matters, swatch.

I have been knitting for 63 years and have found that not many companies do have the same size in needles. I ALWAYS use the little gauge from each company to determine needle size. Therefore, I have several. There is no universal size.

Interesting thread! I'm on my second sock of a pair and must have used my Hiya Hiya on the first one. I've been struggling a bit with the feeling that the 2nd sock seems a bit smaller, but the stitch count is the same. I'm using a Chiaogoo on the second one. Time to get my chronometer out and double check.

The Chiaogoos I have seem to be accurate to their size.

I've only got Chiaogoo in the smaller sizes but do check them with my gauge thingy before putting them back in their slots....I do have them in sizes 1.50mm through and have picked up a 1.50mm and a 1.75mm as I'd had them slid out of my case....I now have a little felt pouch with the sizes labelled

ChiaoGoo needles are made in China, sizing is different. On the packaging I have the needle is a 2.75mm which on the Skacel needle gauge is between a US1(2.5mm) and US2(3.0). ChiaoGoo labels this as a US2. Addis are made in Germany, metric sizing. The Knitter's Pride gauge lists a 2.75mm needle as a US2. To be accurate purchase a Vernier caliper then you won't have to worry about sizing. There is no one gauge that will measure needles the same.

From the best I can measure them, they seem to be the same size.
