I agree with you, I read through five or six dog sweater patterns and found the instructions confusing because I couldn't envision the final coat. But I made one anyway. With a few modifications like ribbing instead of a rolled collar - I used this pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-boyfriend-dog-sweater

This was my first time doing Intarsia (and I didn't quite do it correctly - it's too tight)

There are several templates for dog sweaters on Ravelry that allow you to customize the sweater to the specific dog. I knitted a sweater for my DIL's Bully rescue sight unseen and it fit perfectly. The blue line is because Abby's (the dog) human dad is a police officer, hence the thin blue line. I'd encourage you to try one of these templates! Happy knitting!

Actually very easy once you get going...just a rectangular with a roll collar..the leg holes are like thumb holes...keep looking til you find one that makes sense when you read it...all at once you will say AHHHHHAH! Got it!!
