Hi!

The son of a friend of mine will travel to Germany. He is just a teenager, and he will live there for one year, to learn german. His mother asked me to knit a hat for him. Before I start a new project, I thought it was a good idea to come here and ask for the knitters for live in Germany: what the guys wear in your country? I mean, what kind of knitted hat? Is there a popular pattern for guys? Or any hat will fit?

Thank you in advance!

Just normal stuff, like teenagers everywhere else I should have thought , beanies etc. Hopefully Andy, Der Fisherman will see your request and suggest something.

Simple beanies will always work. I haven't noticed a special hat rage around, so you can just keep it simple or maybe with ribs or small cables.
I checked with German-born American friends who visit their home country frequently. They say the young men there do the jeans and sweaters, jackets and scarves thing in American style, including wearing the beanie-type knitted or crocheted hats our young men in the US favor...the ones that resemble Navy watch caps.

My first response was to say Lederhosen. That is what my cousin wears. Really outdated on some level, but he likes to be the center of attention at the family reunions. We are having one this year in North Carolina. Can't wait to see what he has on this year.

As far as a hat goes, anything will do. Probabaly a plain ribbed hat is just fine. I made some for my relatives when I visited the last time, and they were thrilled.

I don't think a male in a Kleid/Kleider in Germany or Europe for that matter would be seen in public. Kleider/Kleid means dress - for females -, always has been & still is. other than the Scots wearing kilts.
It does sound funny if I make a mental picture .
