While most of our yarn comes in balls and so no winding needed the hand dyed stuff all comes in skeins and so needs winding.
That's why I don't need a winder- only acrylic and cotton for me. I do rewind yarn (tangled, frogged, measured in to seperate ball etc.) but my Dad taught me how to wind yarn properly, tidily, not too tight, ending up with a thumb hole in the middle and so neat - I enjoy doing it when I have to; but I wouldn't like to wind from a loose hank like my Mum used to (with me holding, arms aching) Thank god those days are gone!

if you are going to be working with 2 different yarns held together, unless it is 2 balls of the exact same yarn DO NOT wind them together. different yarns will frequently not feed at the same rate which will cause 1 or the other to worm out & knot around the other. it is much better to simply work with 2 separate balls. also if you have yarn left after your project you will be able to use them in more ways than if they are wound together.

Thanks for that tip...it does make sense..I wound a couple of balls together (by hand) today, and they even tangle that way...

Well, you certainly all agree on the Stanwood..I have already placed it on my wish list at Amazon. I doubt that I will wait for Christmas ...I am anxious to try this fun tool.

Thank you for you very smart answers.

I ordered one yesterday from the company. Amazon was charging $20 more than the company. I did pay a bit extra for shipping and should have it by Tues morning.
