I would like to try my hand at felting and would like to know what is a good yarn to use? I'm looking to buy some reasonably priced yarn that will do the job.
Thank you for your suggestions!

I have not done any felting myself, my daughter-in-law has.... by accident when a sweater made for her turned into the size for my granddaughter after one washing!
But reading about felting, I think 100% wool yarn is best (or wool fleece). DO NOT USE superwash yarn for felting. Yes, it is 100% wool, but has been specially treated and will not felt properly, if at all.
If you check with your LYS, I'm sure they can help you get the correct yarn for felting.

I would suggest when you find a yarn you like to knit up a swatch and wash it the way you plan to wash you item. See if you like the results.
You will also get a feel for the amount of shrinkage. Measure before and after the wash.

I'd also recommend the Patons Classic Wool. It is 100% wool and is perfect for felting. I used this yarn for the first project I ever felted and it came out perfect, much to my surprise. Bought the purse pattern at a LYS and the pattern called for that brand. It is reasonably priced and you can find it at Michael's or Joann's which means you can use their coupons to get a better price. It comes in 31 colors and some are variegated. You can look at all the available colors on Joann's website.

I have bought good cheap felting yarn from ICE Yarns in Turkey and Hobbi in Denmark. As long as it is 100% animal fiber, non-Superwash, it should felt. Alpaca takes a bit longer because the scales that bind the yarn in felting are shorter than sheep's wool. Lion Brand Fisherman's yarn used to felt really well, but I heard a rumor that some of it had a bit of synthetic in it the last few years, but I haven't checked it out myself.

You've gotten some great suggestions from others. Usually Patons classic wool worsted will be your best selection if you're looking for a good price. KnitPicks is also a good price.

Some white and yellow yarns do not felt so be sure to check with the manufacturer. The reason is because their scales have been taken off of those two colors. However, Patons winter white will felt but it takes longer. Patons Aran which is a creamy white felts nicely.

You will enjoy felting.

patons wool classic is exceptionally good, I have made quite a few hats and mittens using it. I get the coupons from Michael's ( used to be 50 % off at various times) but now is mostly 30%... I think it is 6.99 per 100 gm. skein so very reasonably priced to start off with.....it is a worsted weight and is 100% wool which it has to b for felting.....make sure when u go to felt to have hot water and some agitation and keep checking it for sizing..... have not done needle felting as some people have on this site.....good luck...... u will probably get some other helpful tips here also.....good luck
